About this book
John A. Hassell, M.E., describes himself on the title page as late captain of American Scouts in the Boer Army. His pamphlet is about the camps for Boer prisoners of war in the Bermuda Islands. The text says British press reports praising the camps conflicted with the account of David Duplooy, a young Boer who escaped and reached New York, and that friends there asked Hassell to learn the truth by personal observation.
He sets the press accounts beside what he reports from the camps, including a British duty of five per cent on articles sent to prisoners, which he says conflicts with an article of the Hague Conference, and talks with British soldiers about the prisoners' worn clothing. The introduction also refers to Rev. F. S. Ballentine of Philadelphia and to a letter from Mr. Joubert Reitz. The pamphlet states that any profit from its sale goes to the Boer Relief Fund.
