The Brother Clerks

The Brother Clerks is an 1857 novel by Mary Ashley Townsend (1832-1901), the New Orleans poet and writer who became the city’s unofficial laureate and wrote under the pen name Xariffa. Set among young clerks in antebellum New Orleans, the novel touches the slavery and commerce of the city she knew intimately.
