About this book
Dostoevsky's final novel is a sprawling drama of faith, doubt, and patricide set in a provincial Russian town. Old Fyodor Karamazov, a greedy and dissolute landowner, stands between his three very different sons: the passionate soldier Dmitri, the coldly intellectual atheist Ivan, and the gentle novice Alyosha. When the father is killed, suspicion falls on Dmitri, and the trial becomes a stage for the questions that consumed Dostoevsky all his life. Can there be virtue without God? What do we owe one another? The book holds the famous Grand Inquisitor parable and some of the most searching moral debate in all of fiction.
