The Canadian Dominion: A Chronicle of Our Northern Neighbor is a 1919 history of Canada by Oscar D. Skelton (1878-1941), written for the Yale Chronicles of America series. Skelton was then professor of political economy at Queen’s University and later became Under-Secretary of State for External Affairs, the builder of Canada’s professional foreign service and the most influential Canadian civil servant of his era. The volume narrates Canadian development from the conquest of New France through Confederation in 1867 to the eve of the First World War: responsible government, the building of the Dominion, the CPR, Laurier’s era, and the growth of Canadian autonomy within the Empire that Skelton himself would later advance in office. The book presents Canada to American readers with the clarity that marked all Skelton’s writing. Free PDF download available on BDeBooks.
