About this book
After fifty years in Australia, William Standerton has earned a fortune and raised two devoted children. At their urging, he prepares to return to England and settle into country life. On the eve of departure, his son Jim meets Richard Murbridge, a worn traveller who claims a long acquaintance with Standerton and insists on seeing him. His pointed remarks place an uneasy question beside the family's hopes for a comfortable new home.
Guy Boothby combines this family opening with a detective story set in England. Later, Jim follows a shopkeeper's information about Murbridge and passes it to Detective Robins at Scotland Yard. A lodging address and an assumed name become clues in a search that repeatedly frustrates the investigators. The novel offers readers a mystery built from conversations, personal connections and the work of tracing a man through the city, with family affection lending weight to the uncertainty.
