About this book

The Clue is a detective novel by Carolyn Wells, published in 1909, and one of the early cases of her gentlemanly investigator Fleming Stone. At a grand country house on the eve of a society wedding, the bride-to-be is found dead, and the assembled guests and family each seem to hide a secret. When the local efforts flounder, the quiet and observant Fleming Stone is called in to read the small clues that others have missed and to name the guilty among the respectable. Wells was one of the most popular mystery writers of her time, and the book is a neat example of the classic house-party puzzle that would flourish in the golden age to come.

Carolyn Wells

Carolyn Wells (1862 to 1942) was an American writer who produced a huge number of mystery novels, as well as poetry, humour, and children's books. Her detective Fleming Stone appeared in dozens of popular puzzles.
