About this book
A disputed memorandum draws spies and adventurers into Stockholm during July 1917. Baron Frederick Fayerling wants the paper carried by Bernard Jenin, a young fugitive from Russia, and sets his associates to work obtaining it. A newspaper warning about a hidden figure directing the city's unrest supplies a wider background of wartime intrigue and private ambition.
The action reaches the Copper House, where Leonard Grath watches Fayerling's men search from floor to floor. He worries about the journalist Maurice Wallion, then receives a reassuring message wrapped around a pebble. Julius Regis builds this detective story through tense exchanges, secret movements and the pressure placed on a household caught in the dispute. Readers who enjoy political mysteries can follow how the search for one document brings personal loyalties into conflict with organized schemes.
