About this book
The Corset and the Crinoline is described on its title page as a book of modes and costumes from remote periods to the present time. The title page promises 54 full-page and other engravings. The summary under the heading Chapter VII lists, among others, the stays drawn by Hogarth, dress during the French revolutionary period, and short waists and long trains.
The text reports that a French physician of high standing positively asserts that corsets cannot be charged with causing deviation of the vertebral column. The text notes that towards the end of George III.'s reign, gentlemen, as well as ladies, availed themselves of the assistance of the corset-maker. A verse in the book calls on the Muse to sing in epic strain the petticoat.
