Two Philosophers live with their wives in a dark pine wood, handing out wisdom to the country folk until murder, arrest, and the old gods upend their quiet. When a neighbour's daughter is carried off by the god Pan, and later by Aengus Og, one Philosopher sets out to bring her home, while the leprechauns of Gort na Cloca Mora scheme to reclaim a stolen crock of gold. James Stephens braids Irish folklore, sly comedy, and long philosophical digressions into a story that works as both fairy tale and argument about happiness. First published in 1912, it won the Polignac Prize and remains his best loved book.

About the author

James Stephens

James Stephens (1880-1950) was an Irish poet and novelist central to the Irish Literary Revival. Largely self-taught, he won fame with The Crock of Gold and Irish Fairy Tales, retelling old Gaelic myth in his own voice. A friend of James Joyce, he also wrote lyric poetry and later broadcast for the BBC.
