The Crowd
First published in 1895, this short and influential study asks what happens to individuals once they become part of a crowd. Gustave Le Bon argues that people in a mass lose their capacity for reason and judgment, growing impulsive, credulous, and easily led, as though governed by a single collective mind. He examines how leaders sway assemblies, how beliefs spread by suggestion and contagion, and how juries, voters, and mobs behave in ways their members never would alone. The book became a foundational text of social psychology and was read closely by figures ranging from Freud to twentieth-century political strategists. Its conclusions remain debated, but its influence on how we think about propaganda and mass behavior is hard to overstate. Free PDF and EPUB edition available here.
