About this book
Dame Desley's four children must exchange carefree days in the country for the guidance of Mr. Learning while their mother is away. Dick expects education to bring fame and wealth, Matty dreams of fine clothes, Lubin resents the interruption, and Nelly urges them to trust their mother's choice. Their guardian proves an unusual visitor: his breakfast consists of paper and ink.
A. L. O. E. turns lessons and habits into people, places, and household goods in this children's allegory. The children furnish their cottages of Head with purchases from the town of Education, crossing brook Bother and climbing hill Puzzle along the way. A carpet from History's shop becomes a burden to carry, while Miss Folly offers Matty easier pleasures. The story's playful names and direct moral commentary reveal a view of childhood in which effort, vanity, ambition, and duty shape the value of learning.
