About this book

The Dance of Life is by Havelock Ellis. The preface says the book was planned many years ago, and of its running idea says “My feeling is, it was born with me.” A list of entries includes “Chinese life, the art of balancing æsthetic temperament and guarding against its excesses” and “Chrysostom, on dancing at the Eucharist.”

A passage describes a man whose curiosity, on the one hand, was transformed into methods that were endlessly ingenious and inventive, and on the other was guided and held in check by inflexible caution and good sense. Æsthetics is called “the metaphysical side of all productive living.” The text insists that the practice of morals is not a matter of æsthetics but a matter of art.
