About this book
The Daughter of the Storage and Other Things in Prose and Verse is by William Dean Howells. The contents list names, among others, A Presentiment, Captain Dunlevy's Last Trip and The Return to Favor.
The text observes that one does not store the least of one's personal or household gear without giving a hostage to storage, and that no matter how few things one puts in, one never takes everything out. The Forsyths sometimes spent a whole winter in a hotel, sometimes had a flat, and sometimes had a separate dwelling during the ten or twelve years that followed. On his way up-town in the Subway, Erlcort clings to the wonted strap with a romance he had bought, and thinks he will try giving it to the trainman, who says his wife will like it. In a scene set out as dialogue, Fountain says the paper in which a robe came seems to be for Mrs. Clarence Fountain, and Mrs. Fountain snatches it from him.
