About this book
The Deipnosophists by Athenaeus of Naucratis includes passages on meals and food. One passage looks at how Homer describes meals: bread placed on the table in baskets, roast meat shared among the guests, and the Greek words for supper and for an equal feast, with a verse of Antiphanes and a note on what Zenodotus made of the phrase. Greek words are printed in the text beside the English.
Another passage discusses oysters, saying where they grow, which are best and in what season, and that they are good boiled with mallow, sorrel or fish. A following numbered section names Mnesitheus the Athenian and his treatise on Comestibles. A third passage gives verses about going to supper with a rich man whose wit is praised, a parasite who must show his wit, and one Acestor, and is followed by a mention of Araros and his Hymenaeus.
