About this book

Across the Great Plains, a night train carries engineer Sinclair, his wife and his former acquaintance Foster toward Denver. The comforts of their Pullman car contrast with the lonely ranches, scattered stations and open country outside. Augustus Allen Hayes gives this short railway adventure a busy setting of porters, conductors, passengers and signals, while the approaching breakfast stop introduces a warning traveling faster than the train.

At another station, Sally Johnson tells agent Jim Watkins that a gang intends to derail Number Seventeen and rob those aboard. Watkins questions her while passing the news along the telegraph wire. His calm handling of an urgent report gives the story its tension.
