About this book

Military campaigns and arguments over government meet in Bartolome Mitre's account of South American independence. This English edition, translated and condensed by William Pilling in 1893, places the lives of San Martin and Bolívar within a wider history of revolution. Its chapters follow military preparations, the passage of the Andes, alliances between Argentina and Chile, and operations directed toward Peru. Maps and accounts of supplies give the political struggle a practical setting.

The narrative also looks beyond those campaigns to competing ideas about freedom and authority. In the passage on Mexico, Iturbide and Guerrero reach an agreement around the Plan of Iguala, bringing religious policy, constitutional monarchy and national independence into the same debate. Readers interested in how new states took shape can follow the connections between armies, local interests and proposed systems of government. The condensed edition offers a broad historical account with biographical detail woven through it.
