About this book
This volume gathers the fables of Phædrus in English, with translations credited to Smart and Riley. Several fables begin with a sentence stating the lesson before the story. In one, a jackdaw dresses in fallen peacock feathers and is driven off by the peacocks. In another, a dog carrying meat across a river sees his own shadow in the water, grabs for it and loses what he had. One titled The Cow, the She-Goat, the Sheep and the Lion opens by saying that an alliance with the powerful is never to be relied upon.
Not every piece is about animals. In one passage a barbarian challenges one of the Romans, and a man with a lisping voice asks the general, "May I?" In another, Phalereus sees a man in flowing robes and is told it is Menander. A verse piece follows two travellers on the road, one fearful and one an able fencer, when a robber appears.
