About this book
The Fleet, with the subtitle Its Rivers, Prison, and Marriages, is by John Ashton. The text says the house attached to the Spa is said to have been the residence of Nell Gwyn, but tradition has assigned her so many houses. A quoted account says the proprietor told the writer his waters were in very great repute, and known by the name of Bagnigge Wells.
The text says that for prisoners who lye two in a Bedd, the Warden is to find them Bedd, and that for Bedd and Chamber they are to pay. The text says the lodgings of ease were provided for men of quality and not for the mean sorte of prisoners, as the accusation would seeme to inferre. The text says a man who got into debt was locked up in the Fleet Prison, but was allowed to reside within the Rules, a district round about the prison, out of which no prisoner might wander.
