The Fountainhead is Ayn Rand's novel of 1943 about the conflict between the individual and society. Howard Roark is a young architect who refuses to compromise his modern designs for clients, critics or popular taste, even when it costs him commissions and income. Against him stands Peter Keating, a talented but conventional rival who follows the crowd, and Ellsworth Toohey, an influential critic who promotes collective values. Dominique Francon, a newspaper columnist, and the publisher Gail Wynand are drawn into Roark's story as it moves toward a famous trial. The novel presents the philosophy that Rand later called Objectivism, and it is a long, much-debated classic of twentieth-century American fiction.
