The Free Range
Bud Larkin, eldest son of a rich Chicago banker, has been out west a year with his money in sheep, and he has to walk his southern flocks north to his Montana range before fall closes in. The grass between belongs to Beef Bissell, a cattle king whose herds cover the country between the Gray Bull and the Big Horn, and Bissell will not let a single sheep cross it. The refusal reopens the long quarrel between cattlemen and sheepmen, fought out here with rustlers, stampedes, night raids and a drive that cannot stop. Two people complicate matters: Juliet Bissell, who knew Larkin back in Chicago, and Black Mike Stelton, the Bar T foreman, who has wanted her for ten years. Sullivan published the book in 1913 under the name Elwell Lawrence.
