About this book
A farmer puts aside the demands of planting season and sets out on foot through the spring countryside. With a bag over his shoulder, he discovers how stubbornly the habits of farm work follow him, even when there are no cows nearby to milk. David Grayson's first person account combines walking adventures with reflections on possessions, routine and the freedom to spend a morning without a fixed purpose.
Published in 1913, these linked sketches follow country roads into encounters with a minister, gardeners, a peddler and people in the city. The narrative also pauses over smaller experiences: sunshine in the woods, birdsong, a roadside brook and the wish to share a view with a friend. Readers interested in rural life and reflective travel writing will find a personal examination of contentment, shaped by both ordinary landscapes and the people who inhabit them.
