About this book
The Future of an Illusion is by Sigmund Freud, translated by W. D. Robson-Scott, with a 1928 imprint. In one passage the text recalls Saint Boniface felling the tree venerated as sacred by the Saxons, and says people have a horror of a proposed change as if civilization would be exposed to an even greater danger.
Another passage says that works of art promote feelings of identification and recall a culture to its ideals, and that perhaps the most important part of a culture's psychical inventory is its religious ideas, which the text calls its illusions. Chapter III opens with the question, wherein lies the peculiar value of religious ideas. A further passage has the author wondering whether publishing the work might harm the cause of psycho-analysis.
