About this book
The preface identifies the volume as a collection of short stories by Richard Middleton. A narrator describes Fairfield as a place where inhabitants let ghosts come and go without fuss, and calls the village the ghostiest place in all England. The narrator reports seeing a headless man sitting beside a well in broad daylight, with children playing about his feet as if he were their father.
An author emerges into the street and sunshine in a somewhat dazed state. The author's book, which an hour before had seemed supremely important, becomes almost insignificant beside a vast collection of printed matter. The author feels he has betrayed himself by delivering a work that has become part of his personality into the hands of strangers unable to understand it.
