About this book
The Golden Censer is a volume by John McGovern. The opening words say the writer takes pleasure in laying before readers a volume whose aim is to lighten the cares of to-day and heighten the hopes of to-morrow. A list names, among others, the topics Sickness and Sorrow, each followed by a line of summary phrases.
The text describes a cat that is upon a mouse with the ferocity of the greatest members of her agile tribe the moment the mouse so much as moves, and adds that so it is with us. The text gives Tennyson a line that says it is better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all. A passage describes an officer who has rushed into a torrent of traffic, has grasped a poor beast by the bridle, and has sent a bullet on a mission of mercy through its brain.
