About this book
The Great Company is a history of the merchants and adventurers trading into Hudson's Bay, with maps, plans, illustrations and original drawings among its stated contents. The two pioneering traders hear repeated mention of a deep, wide river to the west, and for a time feel half tempted to travel toward it. The adventurers return to Montreal after more than a year's absence, accompanied by three hundred Indians and possessing sixty canoes laden with furs.
The Royal Society for Improving Natural Knowledge requests passage for observers to Fort Churchill in Hudson's Bay to observe Venus crossing the sun. The observatory request asks the Company to furnish materials and servants' assistance, with the Society offering to repay the whole charge and requesting an estimate.
