The Great God Pan

A surgeon named Raymond cuts into a young woman’s brain to let her see the god Pan, and within days the experiment has wrecked her mind. That is the first chapter. The rest of Machen’s 1894 novella works like a slow investigation, moving through London drawing rooms and a trail of ruined men while scattered witnesses assemble what became of the child born after that night. Machen’s method is suggestion rather than display, and the worst of it happens off the page, in documents the reader is told cannot be reproduced. Critics called it degenerate when it appeared; Lovecraft and, later, Stephen King treated it as a model. It remains a founding text of cosmic horror. Free PDF and EPUB editions are available here.
