The Guide To Reading

The Guide To Reading is a reading and self-improvement guide by Lyman Abbott (1835-1922), the American Congregationalist clergyman, magazine editor, and writer who succeeded Henry Ward Beecher as pastor of the Plymouth Church of Brooklyn and edited The Outlook magazine for more than three decades. Abbott was one of the leading liberal Protestant voices of the Gilded Age and Progressive Era, a public friend of Theodore Roosevelt, and the author of widely read books on religion, politics, and social questions including Christianity and Social Problems and The Rights of Man. The Guide to Reading offers his recommendations for a programme of general reading in literature, history, religion, and social thought for the educated American layperson of the early twentieth century. The book is a primary source for the American Progressive Era self-education tradition. Free PDF download available on BDeBooks.
