The Happy Prince and Other Tales is the 1888 fairy tale collection by Oscar Wilde (1854-1900), containing five stories: The Happy Prince, The Nightingale and the Rose, The Selfish Giant, The Devoted Friend, and The Remarkable Rocket. Wilde wrote the tales ostensibly for children but loaded them with the irony, social criticism, and aching melancholy that have made them lasting favourites of adult readers. The Happy Prince, in which a gilded statue and a swallow give away everything for the city’s poor, and The Selfish Giant, with its garden of perpetual winter, are among the most loved short tales in English.
