About this book
A small parcel from Hong Kong leaves Mr. Lightnut struggling with the simplest questions: who sent it, what it contains, and how to open it. His servant Jenkins supplies practical answers while his employer fusses over manners and a roll of red silk. Francis Perry Elliott builds this comic novel around that gap between Lightnut's confident opinions and his uncertain grasp of events.
An inscription on the pajamas draws a professor into talk of experiments and magic. Meanwhile, Lightnut's thoughts keep returning to the woman he loves, and a conversation with his friend Billings produces further confusion over Francis and Frances. Told in Lightnut's excitable first person, the story offers verbal comedy, romantic misunderstandings, and the spectacle of a gentleman repeatedly missing what others appear to understand.
