About this book
Thomas Stamford Raffles, formerly Lieutenant-Governor of Java and its dependencies and president of the Society of Arts and Sciences at Batavia, is named on the title page of this history in two volumes. The title page of Volume I reads Second Edition, London, 1830, and the book is dedicated to the Prince Regent.
One passage on trade says the Chinese are known for industry, the Arab traders are keen and adventurous, and the Búgis are distinguished for the fairness of their dealing. It lists what Java sends to the other islands, among them rice, salt, oil, tobacco and timber, and the tin, gold-dust, camphor and spices gathered at its ports. Another passage tells how the Dutch bribed the chief Jága Diníngrat and advanced towards the capital. A further passage records that when British rule required slaves to be registered, the Panámbahan of Súmenap said his would not be registered, and that they should be free.
