The history of the Spanish invasion, and the armada styled invincible is an English translation of part of the historical writings of Hugo Grotius (1583-1645), the Dutch jurist and theologian who is recognised as the founder of modern international law. Grotius is best known for De Iure Belli ac Pacis, his 1625 treatise on the laws of war and peace, and for his earlier Mare Liberum that argued the freedom of the seas against Iberian monopoly claims. He also produced a major Latin history of the Dutch revolt against Spain, the Annales et Historiae de Rebus Belgicis, on which the present English account draws. The book covers the failed Spanish invasion attempt of 1588 and the destruction of the Armada in the English Channel and around the Scottish and Irish coasts. Free PDF download available on BDeBooks.
