The Hostage

The Hostage is the English translation of L’Otage, a verse drama by Paul Claudel (1868-1955), the French Catholic poet and dramatist who was also a career diplomat. Set during the Napoleonic upheavals, the play turns on a woman forced to sacrifice her happiness to save the imprisoned Pope, the agonised choice between love and duty that runs through Claudel’s religious theatre.
