About this book

Through the life of Hai Ebn Yokdhan, Ibn Tufayl examines how observation and reasoning can lead from knowledge of nature to belief in God. Simon Ockley's 1708 English translation presents this inquiry as a narrated life, accompanied by notes and an appendix on the religious questions raised by its argument. The book brings philosophical discussion into the account of a person's intellectual development.

In the passage on the senses, hearing, sight, smell, taste and touch become starting points for thinking about the limits of bodily perception. The discussion then considers the relationship between the body and an enduring spiritual essence. Changes between water and air, and between plants and earth, supply examples for reasoning about physical change. Readers interested in Islamic philosophy can follow a sustained argument about experience, knowledge and spiritual permanence while seeing how an early English translator frames the work.
