About this book

The Lake Gun is by James Fenimore Cooper. A description of the Seneca says it is remarkable for its "Wandering Jew" and the "Lake Gun," and that the "Wandering Jew" is seen at times off Jefferson, near the head of this beautiful sheet, and next appears anchored in the shallow water near the outlet.

The Indian, motioning toward a point near a mile distant, speaks of the Swimming Seneca, who for a thousand winters is to swim in the waters of this lake, and calls it the tradition of his people. A speaker says the wicked may flourish for a while, but there is a law that is certain to bring him within the power of punishment, and that the man who tells the people their faults is a truer friend than he who harps only on their good qualities.
