About this book
This book was published in Philadelphia in 1851. Its contents are a preface, a dictionary of flowers, a calendar of flowers and a dial of flowers, and the title page promises coloured illustrations from original drawings. Flowers come with meanings, as with the Primrose, listed as Early Grief. Verses and short pieces of prose accompany the entries. The Primrose entry gives its old name Paralisos and the story of a youth who died of grief and was changed into the flower, with lines from Cymbeline.
The Snowdrop appears in a poem in which Spring and Hope speak, ending with the line that the Snowdrop brings Hope and Spring. The calendar pairs dates with flowers and saints, and gives Latin plant names such as Solidago Virga aurea for golden rod.
