The Laughing Willow

The Laughing Willow is a 1918 collection of comic verse and drawings by Oliver Herford (1860-1935), the American humorist and illustrator whose epigrams and small gift books made him one of the best-known wits of early twentieth-century New York. The collection gathers Herford’s light verse on the follies of the day, accompanied by his characteristic pen-and-ink illustrations, with much of the material touched by the First World War then in progress, treated in his mock-solemn satirical manner. Herford was a fixture of the Players Club and the American magazine world, contributing to Life, Punch, and Harper’s, and his throwaway sayings were quoted as widely as his books.
