About this book

Individual rights set the standard against which Frédéric Bastiat measures public power in this political essay from 1850. He treats personal freedom and property as rights that exist before legislation, then argues that collective force should protect them. The dispute begins when government uses the law to transfer advantages from one section of society to another. Bastiat's reasoning keeps the relationship between the individual and the state at the centre of the discussion.

The essay also examines the ambition to shape whole populations through rules. In passages drawing on Montesquieu and examples from ancient Greece, Bastiat challenges plans for arranging wealth, work and civic behaviour by legislation. These references give the argument a wider setting than a single policy dispute.
