About this book

The Life of Mrs. Humphry Ward is written by her daughter, Janet Penrose Trevelyan. The author’s note thanks the many friends who helped in the writing of the book, especially those who sent the letters they possessed from Mrs. Ward. A first-person recollection describes Fox How as a pretty house with a wide lawn and garden, and says it occurred to Mary that it would be first-rate fun to pick “all those red leaves”, and the writer obediently helped her.

The text places the foundation of Mary’s passionate adoration for the fells, with their streams, bogs and stone walls, in the years from six to nine. A first-person account says that Mrs. Ward thought out her tale of Eleanor either in the little salotto that was furnished for her or walking up and down a marvellous terrace.
