The Life or Legend of Gaudama, the Buddha of the Burmese, is a landmark study by Paul Ambroise Bigandet (1813-1894), the French Catholic bishop and missionary in Burma who became one of the first Western scholars to present Burmese Buddhism seriously. Translating and annotating Burmese sources, Bigandet gave nineteenth-century Europe one of its earliest reliable accounts of the Buddha’s life as Burmese Buddhists told it. The book remains a foundational text of Western Buddhist studies. Free PDF download available on BDeBooks.
