Michael Lanyard is a gentleman by manner and a master thief by trade, an orphan raised in the Paris underworld who has made himself the most elegant criminal in Europe under the name of the Lone Wolf. Vance sets him loose in a tale of jewel robberies, double crosses, and a shadowy criminal syndicate that wants to own him, then complicates his cool self-interest with an unexpected attachment that begins to pull him toward the straight world. Louis Joseph Vance

Louis Joseph Vance (1879-1933) was an American novelist and a prolific writer of popular adventure and crime fiction. He is best remembered for creating the Lone Wolf, the gentleman-thief Michael Lanyard, whose exploits ran through many novels and were adapted into numerous silent and sound films.
