About this book

A bookseller who seems to speak in antique type and smell of old bindings belongs naturally in Eugene Field's world of book collecting. These humorous sketches take the form of an elderly enthusiast's recollections, turning his attachment to books into a series of personal love affairs. Reading in bed, the pursuit of rare volumes, catalogues and the scent of a library all become occasions for affectionate exaggeration.

The narrator also looks beyond his own shelves to the business of literature. His account of booksellers mixes praise for their learning and generosity with anecdotes about Samuel Johnson, Dryden and Pope, including a pair of letters sent to the wrong publishers. The pleasure lies in the movement between a collector's private habits and the human dealings behind printed books. Readers interested in old libraries, literary gossip and the excuses people make for their favorite possessions will find plenty to recognize.

About the author

Eugene Field

Eugene Field developed a wide readership through children's poetry, humorous essays, and a long newspaper career. Often called the poet of childhood, he cultivated a genial public voice while writing columns and verse for readers in several American cities. Echoes from the Sabine Farm shows another side of that work.
