About this book
The title page gives the author's name, Boston and 1907, with a dedication to the memory of the Loyalists of the Massachusetts Bay. A caption at the front gives Thomas Hutchinson, born in Boston in 1711 and governor of Massachusetts from 1771 to 1774. The chapters include The First Charter, The Second Charter, Causes that Led to the American Revolution, Boston Mobs and the Commencement of the Revolution, The Loyalists of Massachusetts and Indians in the Revolution.
One passage describes how Grenville asked the colonists to contribute one hundred thousand pounds a year towards an army. Another lists families such as the Penns, Fairfaxes and Pepperells whose estates were confiscated, and says a baronet in London was allowed five hundred pounds a year by the British government. A later passage gives short biographies of Loyalists, including Edward Winslow, who went with the army to Halifax, Nova Scotia, in 1776.
