Jones rose from commercial travelling to theatrical fame with The Silver King in 1882 and built a career of society dramas and comedies including The Liars and Mrs Dane’s Defence. The Manoeuvres of Jane premiered at the Haymarket Theatre and ran with great success. The play shows the polished commercial comedy of the late Victorian West End at its most assured.
