The Masked Bridal

A wedding staged for guests becomes a source of alarm when the masked bride and groom reveal unexpected identities. Mrs. Georgie Sheldon's novel places this unsettling ceremony beside the hardships of a young woman in New York, where a winter visit to a pawnbroker turns a simple effort to reclaim a watch into a frightening dispute. Money, reputation and the power of appearances give the opening its tension, with each encounter raising doubts about whom to trust.

Later, Edith listens to Giulia Fiorini describe her connection with Emil Correlli and the wrongs she has suffered. Their conversation brings sympathy into a situation shaped by jealousy, deception and a disputed marriage. Edith's search for a way out, including her urgent interest in an unlocked stairway, gives the mystery an immediate practical edge. Readers interested in romantic melodrama will find scenes built around anxious confrontations, concealed intentions and the question of whether legal ties can be challenged.
