About this book
The Migrations of an American Boat Type is by Howard I. Chapelle. A list of headings names, among others, The New Haven Sharpie, The Chesapeake Bay Sharpie and The North Carolina Sharpie. The New Haven sharpie is described as a flat-bottomed sailing skiff, originally developed for oyster fishing. The type is called very economical to build, easy to handle, maneuverable, fast and seaworthy, and soon adapted for fishing along the eastern and southeastern coasts of the United States.
The text says that if a skiff had a two-mast rig, it was commonly called a sharpie, and a sloop-rigged skiff often was known as a flattie. The text says the sharpie's rapid spread in use can be accounted for by its low cost, light draft, speed, handiness under sail, graceful appearance, and rather astonishing seaworthiness. The text says the New Haven sharpie proved that a long, narrow hull is most efficient in a flat-bottomed boat.
