A Lady of distinction wrote The Mirror of the Graces. The book describes itself as containing general instructions for combining elegance, simplicity, and economy with fashion in dress; hints on female accomplishments and manners; and directions for the preservation of health and beauty. The contents list includes, among others, On the Female Form, General Thoughts on Dress and Personal Decoration, and Of the Detail of Dress.
The text says a late author, in a work entitled Remarks on the English and French Ladies, very ably points out the superior attention which the women of France pay to the cultivation of their air and manners. A passage describes one fair figure who appears with the chastened dignity of a vestal, with proportions of a less aërial outline. A passage says that in proportion as the figure approaches the one extreme or the other, we call it grave or gay, majestic or graceful.
