About this book
The title page names E. Phillips Oppenheim and gives illustrations by Hanson Booth and the year 1913. The contents list, among others, has a Book One and a Book Two, with chapters among others titled Sympathy and Selfishness, A Ruined Career and The Flight of Lady Anne. Mabel admits quietly that she has most certainly flirted with Portel. The narration says Carraby went slowly out and that in his letter was the death warrant of the man who stood between him and his ambitions.
A chapter headed A Ruined Career shows Sir Julien Portel standing in the middle of his bedroom, dressed in shirt and trousers only, with the sofa and chairs around him littered with portions of the brilliant uniform he had torn from his person with almost feverish haste. Herr Freudenberg abandons his conversation for a moment, and whispers in the ear of Sir Julien that he must have an answer to his proposition. Falkenberg shrugs his shoulders and says that if one listens attentively one will hear the murmur of Paris calling one back.
