The Mummy! A Tale of the Twenty-Second Century is an 1827 science fiction novel by Jane C. Loudon (1807-1858), the English writer and horticulturist who published the book anonymously at age twenty in the wake of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. The novel is set in a 2126 England transformed by airships, automatic agricultural machines, and steam-powered surgeons, and centres on the reanimated mummy of the Egyptian pharaoh Cheops who intervenes in the politics of the future Catholic British monarchy. The book is one of the earliest science fiction novels by a woman and one of the earliest works of fiction to imagine technological futurity in detail. Jane Loudon later married the gardening writer John Claudius Loudon and became a successful author of popular horticultural books for women. Free PDF download available on BDeBooks.
