Orphaned and separated from the man she loves, she is carried off to Udolpho, a brooding castle in the Apennines ruled by her aunt’s sinister husband, Montoni. Strange sounds, veiled portraits, and apparent hauntings press on her nerves, though Radcliffe famously supplies rational explanations in the end. The novel made the explained supernatural fashionable and shaped everything from later horror to Jane Austen’s gentle parody in Northanger Abbey. Ann Ward Radcliffe

Ann Radcliffe (1764-1823) was an English author who did more than anyone to popularise the Gothic novel. Reclusive and admired, she pioneered the ‘explained supernatural,’ pairing atmospheric dread with heroines of sense and sensibility, and influenced writers from Austen to Poe.
