What George does up-country, and the promise Alec makes him there, leave Alec unable to answer when a dismissed subordinate takes his own version to the London papers. Maugham built the book from a play written years earlier, and his lasting subject is already here, the gap between a man's reputation and what he will not say.

W. Somerset Maugham

W. Somerset Maugham (1874-1965) was one of the most popular British authors of the twentieth century, working across the novel, the short story, and the stage. He trained as a physician and served in wartime intelligence, experiences that sharpened his clear prose and unsentimental view of people.
